1Sunriver - A Fly-In Adventure
We think the Sunriver Airport is an undiscovered jewel. “I’ve been a pilot for 35 years” says Stephanie Hartung, Sunriver Airport Manager. “I’ve made it a point to fly up and down the west coast looking for fly-in resort destinations. I can tell you there are only a handful and none to compare to Sunriver.”
Yes. There is something very special about flying into some of the most majestic mountains and river scenery in the country, then tying down, and being a five iron away from the first hole, or a bike ride away from a luxury spa, or a hop and a skip from four star dining.
According to the original developer, John Gray, construction of the airstrip happened after much discussion between the original investors. “We had quite a debate over the airstrip, especially whether or not the hangers should be visible from the lodge. Some wanted to keep the land as an open meadow with an uninterrupted view, while others thought an airstrip would be handy.” Ultimately, the airstrip was constructed.
The airport is 100% privately owned so the operation receives no federal funding, unlike the majority of other airports which serve resort destinations. But the cost of maintaining the facilities are well worth it.
“We are looking at the airport’s intrinsic value to the resort and the Sunriver community and can't imagine Sunriver Resort without it” says Hartung. Last May Sunriver finished a runway expansion and repaving project just in time for the JELD-WEN Tradition which brings golfers from around the world to Sunriver. Having the airport available factored into the decision to hold the tournament here. Also the US Forest Service bases a team of firefighters at the airport during the summer months. That means Sunriver residents have a first response team right in the neighborhood. According to Stephanie, “We can land and park a variety of airplanes here; The Golf Stream 5, Lear Jet, Global Express, and Challenger. We have something to offer, most other resorts do not”.
