Ideas for Engaging Generation Y in a Learning Environment

Generation Y is known for their increased use of today’s technology. With so many “on-the-go” options available to them such as social networks, online games and up-to-the minute news updates, how do you engage this generation in a sit-down learning environment?

  • Shorter Sessions – Generation Y’ers are active and want to get to the meat of the topic, before quickly moving on to the next topic
  • Keep information current – Gen Y likes to know what the hot trends are in business - whether it be “green” initiatives or a new social networking site. They also do not place much value on studies which were done several years ago.
  • Add Q & A sessions or discussion type breakouts into your program – Generation Y likes to contribute and be a part of the bigger picture
  • Minimize the amount of PowerPoint used – PowerPoint is considered “older technology” by this tech savvy group. Rather than read through their notes on a screen, they want to feel engaged by a speaker.
  • Include Breakout Sessions on Work/Life Balance – Incorporate the Gen Y motto - Work hard, play hard
  • Community Service Teambuilding – Generation Y is big on community service and they want to be a part of a company that gives back
  • Give time for them to get to know their peers – Gen Yers will often choose their workplace based off of how many friends they have or are able to make. Give them time to get to know their peers through teambuilding or smaller breakout sessions. Also allow for some longer breaks during the program for extra networking.
